The 2024 Survey of Military Veterans, conducted by YouGov between August 19 and September 3, reveals that the U.S. military is facing a severe recruitment crisis, with three of the four major branches failing to meet enlistment targets in 2023. This shortfall poses a significant threat to national security, as experts warn that America is ill-prepared for potential military conflict due to insufficient troop numbers.
The survey highlights a key factor contributing to this issue: 80% of Gen Z recruits come from extended military families. However, political and policy divisions within the military have led to a sharp decline in support from conservative veterans, who are increasingly unwilling to recommend military service to younger family members. The survey underscores how recent Department of Defense changes and dissatisfaction with the military's current direction are contributing to this growing reluctance.
